Jack Splash is one-half of the electro-funk-soul duo, Plantlife. I'm sure you've never heard of them, as most of their moderate success has been achieved in the UK. But Jack's undeniable talent as both an artist and a producer has landed him in the lab with some of today's musical greats, including Alicia Keys, John Legend, Missy Elliot, Cee-Lo, Estelle, Jamie Foxx, Solange, and Jazmine Sullivan, just to name a few. He's taking a stab at a solo career in the near future, and one of his first solo tracks, "I Could Have Loved You" featuring Jazmine Sullivan and Missy Elliott, is craaaaazy. The sound and feel are both very 80s, with the Prince-esque drum pattern and the electro-driven synths.
Toni Braxton is also back on the block, with a new label (Atlantic Records), and hard at work on putting together a new album. A few buzz tracks leaked late last year to lukewarm reception, but most of the ballads to surface recently, penned by The Underdogs (the production team most notably responsible for the music in Dreamgirls), have all been of stellar quality. They really put you in the mind of old Toni, at her prime. Below are two of my favorites, the heartfelt "Heart Never Had A Hero" and the piercing serenade, "Pulse."
